A Step-by-Step Guide to Purchasing Large Canvas Prints
When you're working with a larger canvas size, it's important to consider both image and placement. The ideal large-scale print looks at home on your walls and adds to the décor of your space. Choose the wrong size and it will quickly dwarf everything else, turning the image from a feature into an eyesore.
The following strategies and styling tips will help you ensure you can design, order, and hang your large canvas prints with ease.
1. Pick your spot carefully
Before you even head to our website, take some measurements of your space and find the right location for your big canvas print. In our sizing guide, we mentioned making sure that larger-scale prints didn't overwhelm the rest of the furniture and design elements in the rooms.
For example, if you're hanging a large canvas print above a couch, the canvas should stretch to a maximum of 3/4 of the width of the whole couch.
2. Give it room to breathe
If you're going for our largest sizes (between 24x36 and 32x48), you'll want to make sure that the wall you're choosing is large enough to fit the print with a few inches on either side. At the very least, there should be 1" of white space on each side of the print.
However, while it's important to give the print room to breathe, a print that's too small for the wall will look awkward. You can avoid this by making sure the print you choose takes up at least 60% of the width of the wall. If your wall is too large, you can order multiple prints, and mix and match to create a stunning gallery wall.
3. Find the right photography or art print
After you've selected a place in your home for your large canvas print, the next step is picking out the photograph you want to use. Make sure it's something that you love, since you'll be looking at it a lot.
If you're opting for a large-scale print, you may want to avoid certain types of images, like close-up portraits, as they can make a space feel smaller. Instead, opt for landscapes, nature scenes, or even abstract art.
4. Don't be afraid to mix and match
If you're working with a large, empty wall, don't be afraid to mix and match a few different canvases to create a large-scale gallery wall. You can opt for multiples of the same size, or pick a few different sizes and create an abstract collection of images.
Nervous about picking out sizes that will work well together? Before you order, mock up a few different gallery wall layouts using painter's tape. By giving yourself an example of how it will all go together, it's easier to ensure you're ordering the correct sizes.
